5 tips for writing on your NGO's blog

Content and style are two important elements. You also have to keep in mind some tricks for coming first in search engine results.

Are you an organisation that uses blogs to connect with your audience? If so, I'm sure that some of the tricks that we share in this article will be useful to you. It's often hard for us to find ideas that inspire us and make interesting reading.

So, firstly and most importantly, I have to think about what I'm going to say, that is, the content. Secondly, we should think about how we're going to say it, that is, about the text’s style. To improve the “how”, we can create, for example: creative titles, links to web pages, lists or well-differentiated paragraphs.

Here are five tips for writing on your NGO's blog:

1. Write with SEO in mind

SEO is the ranking of a web page in search engines like Google. If we appear in the first entries, there will be the highest probability of the blog being read. Use key words, bold fonts, put outgoing or external links, have a Responsive page… All of these tricks will help search engines to optimise your blog and place it among the first entries when internet users search for content similar to that of your article.

2. Use the inverted pyramid

What is the inverted pyramid? It's a pattern that indicates that the ideas which are the most important and those which summarise the content should go in the first paragraph, and those that are less important should go in the remaining paragraphs in order of relevance.

3. Think about creative titles

When you're writing on the Internet, one of the actions you look for is a click. Invent curious titles, like “5 ways to fight against poverty”, and titles that aren’t too long. Curious titles always generate more interest. Check that the URL can be shared on Twitter!

4. Make it simple for the reader!

The most common Internet action is “scrolling down” (that is, moving down the screen with the mouse). This action is called surfing. If the content is not easy to understand, it's quite likely that internet users will scroll down quickly and go to another page. To generate attention, avoid complicated words and ideas which are difficult to digest. Produce simple content; there's no reason not to make it easy.

5. Add images

Images always make reading easier and illustrate your article's ideas. Visual content can be photos, GIFs or even graphics, lately a much-used resource for visually summarising information.
